| Editorial Reviews: Product Description When Jake Lorenz retreats to his family's cabin in the North Minnesota woods for the winter, he s looking for peace, quiet, and time to reflect on the loss of his wife and his job. But instead, he finds destruction and death--a gruesome murder scene on his very doorstep. The more he discovers about the death, the deeper he is drawn into a shadowy struggle for land, wealth, and power. There are forceful men who don t want him to search any further: the corrupt tribal council that controls the nearby Ojibwe casino, the secretive and antisocial plutocrat who owns half the peninsula, and the ruthless Indian Mafia, to name a few. But to save the community he loves, which is set in this harsh and lovely wilderness, Jake must battle personal demons and the deadly forces of man and nature to learn the truth. With origins dating back 200 years and outcomes that could appear in tomorrow's newspaper, In the Absence of Honor whisks readers through a tale of conspiracy, fraud, deception, and betrayal--that reverberate from a small northern community and Indian reservation to powerful forces in Washington, D.C. | |||||||||||
Customer Reviews: First Novel is a Winner October 31, 2008T. N. Luce (Highland Park IL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful The characters, plot and setting are completely original. The pace of the story never gets bogged down with unnecessary detail. The ending is very satisfying. Sometimes we have to give up everything we have to get what we really need. I would like to read more when another book is written. Great Story Teller September 22, 2008J. Stanton 1 out of 1 found this review helpful Character development is first rate. Excellent story that keeps evolving with no "leaping logic" or unbelievable turns of events. Hard to believe this is a first book. Author keeps the story rolling throughout. In The Absence of Honor September 3, 2008James Stoppert 2 out of 2 found this review helpful This was an incredible book, it is hard to believe this is the first book for the author. If that is the case I will be eagerly looking forward to the next ones. His vivid descriptions made me feel like I was there. The story was compelling as the characters came to life. A North Woods Thriller August 1, 2008Harry A. Engelbrecht 4 out of 4 found this review helpful An interesting story of the north woods focusing on its Indian heritage. The story offers suspense, romance and a very real connection with the lake country of northern Minnesota. The author uses a technique reminiscent of James Michener by mixing historical fact with fiction. A book that I found difficult to put down! | |||||||||||
