Mike O'Shaunghnessy - (Micko), is a NYPD cop who was injured in the line of duty. He is sent on medical leave and instructed to rest and relax before coming back to work. He is sent to Bikini Atoll to do what he loves the most - scuba dive. Micko is ready for the long deserved relaxation. He grabs his scuba equipment and takes off. He has no clue what lies ahead in wait for him. The Russians and Japanese are laundering money together and this just begins Micko's wild journey into an unrelaxed and chaotic vacation. There is murder, and a whole lot of suspense. There is also a huge barracuda lurking in the water that will destroy anything in its path. The author relates to historical facts and brings it all together with one big plot, twisting and turning, and adding lots of suspense that will keep you reading. Parts of the story will have you rolling with laughter as Micko's character shows his true self in the novel. Barracuda, by Mike Monahan November 7, 2008James A. Carley (New York) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful A well written story, that is historically accurate. The story and characters are well researched and make this a very enjoyable read. I am looking forward to his next work. Hollywood should take a look at this story as it is much better then some of the current things they are putting out. One Mean Barracuda October 13, 2008L.C. Evans (North Carolina, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful Main character Micko, an NYPD detective, goes on vacation. A monster barracuda that kills sharks for sport turns Micko's holiday into one wild adventure. It doesn't help that two sets of warring criminals are trying to kill each other as well as anyone who gets in their way. Fast-paced with lots of action and realistic diving scenes. This is a fun read. A satisfyingly complex plot with lots of explicit action October 11, 2008Dennis Batchelder (Bellevue, WA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful Mike Monahan's "Barracuda" deftly weaves together the storylines of a mutant barracuda, a convalescing NYPD detective, an uneasy alliance between branches of the Russian Mafia and Japanese Yakuza, a brand-spanking-new diving resort, extreme Aussie divers, a couple of geeky scientists, and Bikinian terrorists. When the above characters all meet up at a Bikini Atoll diving resort, mayhem and bedlam erupt. You have to hang onto your seat, bite your nails, and promise yourself to stay away from the water to get through this fast-moving tale. Monahan's book is full of explicit action: fighting, diving, terror, and sex. His characters are full-bodied and sympathetic (including the fish) and are faced with plenty of conflict. I especially enjoyed "Professor Two-Times", "Professor Two-Times". I look forward to more thrilling rides from Monahan's books. Exciting, fast-paced and easy to read October 6, 2008Female Fire Captain 1 out of 1 found this review helpful It was nice to read a book without all the filler. No lingering fluff. Barracuda is fast-paced, to the point, fun, and easy to read. Anyone that works Public Service knows this stuff follows us no matter where we are. We also always seem to find other Public Service workers out on vacation, usually at the bar. I can relate to several different scenarios portrayed in this book during my own adventures. As a diver, I am glad I too keep a knife on my leg and trauma scissors in my vest! Now back to trying to finish a fluff-filler book. | |
