Clark (CT) I teach guitar lessons, and I have used this book as my starter book for 3 or 4 years now. I find that not only does it teach the basics, but it goes slow enough for young students, and if you skip a couple exercises a week, it goes fast enough for very talented students. The layout is also very friendly looking, so that it doesn't scare kids as much as some other methods.
